Life and music career
Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, popularly known as Phyno, hails from Anambra State and was raised in Enugu State, Nigeria.
His stage name, suggested by a secondary school friend, is derived from the word “phenomenal.” Phyno developed a keen interest in music production during his secondary school days, where he learned to play the drums and piano. Although he initially aspired to become a pilot, his career path shifted towards music.
Throughout secondary school, Phyno honed his musical skills by creating his renditions of various recordings. He pursued higher education in public administration at the Institute of Management and Technology in Enugu. It was during his second year at the institute that he began profiting from his music.
Phyno’s admiration for Mr. Raw as a mentor is noteworthy, and his musical journey officially commenced in 2010. To further his music career, he relocated to Lagos.
In 2012, Phyno initiated the recording of his debut studio album, “No Guts No Glory.” This album featured collaborations with artists like Stormrex, Omawumi, Olamide, P-Square, Timaya, Flavour N’abania, M.I, Ice Prince, and Runtown.
The album, primarily recorded in Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin, introduced notable tracks like “Ghost Mode” featuring Olamide and “Man of the Year (Obago),” which earned him accolades at The Headies Awards.
Phyno’s prominence grew, leading to performances in various events, including the Star Music Trek tour and the Hennessy Artistry Club Tour in 2013.
Despite success, the music video for “Man of the Year (Obago)” faced a ban by the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation in September 2013.
Continuing his musical journey, Phyno released subsequent singles like “Parcel,” “O Set,” “Alobam,” “Authe (Authentic)” featuring Flavour, and “Yayo.” His collaboration with Olamide resulted in the joint album “2 Kings” in 2015.
In March 2019, Phyno announced his third studio album, “Deal With It,” featuring notable artists like Olamide, Falz, Davido, Don Jazzy, Zoro, Runtown, and Teni. The album included hit singles “Agu” and “The Bag.”

Phyno, in an interview with the Nigerian Tribune, expressed his choice to rap in Igbo as a demonstration of his respect for his culture and a commitment to being true to himself.
